Wisconsin Needs Leaders to Uphold Rule of Law | Bill Berrien

Wisconsin’s political establishment has made itself a national disgrace in recent weeks.

A Wisconsin judge was taken into federal custody, accused of breaking the very laws she swore an oath to uphold. Our governor also is trying to explain why he ordered state employees to hinder federal officers in enforcing our nation’s immigration laws.

The nine years I served as a Navy SEAL officer taught me that protecting our country and our Constitution is a sacred duty. We can’t let career politicians put anti-Trump partisanship ahead of common sense and public safety.

President Donald Trump won the national popular vote five months ago and won Wisconsin by the largest margin of any Republican candidate in 40 years. We gave President Trump a mandate to restore law and order, secure the border and remove criminal illegal immigrants from our streets and neighborhoods.

But our state’s liberal leaders are trying to pretend Nov. 5 never happened. To please their small, loud far-left base, they are digging in their heels and “resisting” the president Wisconsin voted for. And now they’re even accused of breaking the law.

Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, 30, from Mexico, had no right to be in America in the first place. He was charged with multiple crimes including battery and domestic abuse. According to the authorities, after someone asked Flores-Ruiz to turn down loud music, he punched the person 30 times and struck a woman who tried to intervene.

But when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and FBI agents arrived outside Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Hannah Dugan’s courtroom to do their jobs and remove this person from our community, the judge allegedly confronted the agents with anger and improperly tried to order the agents out of a public space. When that failed, witnesses say Judge Dugan helped usher the illegal immigrant out of an unusual exit door to help him escape. Luckily, federal law enforcement saw him outside the courthouse and chased him down.

Sadly, the judge’s jaw-dropping behavior is not some one-off exception. It is one more example of a deeper problem in our state.

We have a liberal administration that has lost touch with reality and puts Wisconsin citizens last. Gov. Tony Evers has fostered a climate of lawlessness and partisan “resistance.” A few days earlier, the Evers administration had issued a memo dictating how state employees should interact with immigration agents. It basically told our taxpayer-funded state workers to behave like the personal defense attorneys of illegal immigrants: Demand ICE agents’ names and badge numbers, cooperate as little as possible, refuse them access to certain spaces and block them from accessing files — even if they have a warrant.

As his craziness has backfired, Evers has tried to backpedal. Now he claims he never encouraged state workers to break the law. But the governor has shown Wisconsin his true colors over and over again. He has tried to give illegal immigrants Wisconsin drivers’ licenses. He has supported sanctuary cities. Whether it’s supporting illegal immigration or redefining Wisconsin moms as “inseminated persons,” Gov. Evers seems to embrace every radical and dangerous idea the far left comes up with.

The people of Wisconsin have spoken. We are done with the career bureaucrats and compromised politicians who put America and Wisconsin last. Law-abiding citizens should not have our tax dollars taken from us to pay the salaries of a governor and a judge who side with those accused of crimes and against our state, people and president.

Wisconsin deserves so much better than this failed Democratic administration that is willing to make our state less safe to spite President Trump. We need a governor who will uphold the rule of law, protect our families and partner with the president we elected. Let’s make that change in 2026.
